The Polokwane International Convention Centre, Polokwane, South Africa.
A new international Convention Centre integral with a Hotel and wildlife reserve on a prominent corner site in close proximity to the City of Polokwane, Limpopo Province.
ZAI Pty Ltd was appointed as lead architects, in association, to master plan, design and document this 43 000 sq m facility.
Extensive market research defined the size of the building and business model. Upon completion of phase 1, the facility will accommodate up to 2000 delegates in various flexible configurations.
The building has an imposing scale characterised by dramatic roof forms, which appear to defy gravity, shielding the steel and glass facades from the robust African sun. Natural rock outcrops, dry stack rock walls, water and indigenous trees are integral with the triple volume interiors of the building.
The architecture reflects not only the business of the international business industry but also the heart and soul of a proud region and people.
The master Plan allows for the further development of two additional exhibition halls, two meeting pods and structured parking.
Construction documentation is complete, site secured and a construction date is awaited.
Current construction value is $ 122 million [Aus].
Project architect: Robin Herbert.
