The Durban ICC Arena, Durban, South Africa.

Since opening in 1997, the Durban ICC is ranked as one of the world’s finest convention facilities.

ZAI Pty Ltd were appointed as lead architects, in association, to design and deliver a 80% extension comprising basement parking, exhibition halls and a tiered seating arena.

The extension accommodates 6000 spectators for sporting events, 10 000 people for concerts and a net increase of 25 000 sq m of exhibition space. The use of operable walls and sophisticated services enables the space to be fully flexible to accommodate a range of different layout configurations and functions.

Upon completion the facility is one of the most advanced convention facilities on the African continent. Flexibility and versatility are key factors in the design of this state-of-the-art technology driven centre.

The urban design brief responds to a strategic concept of a vibrant ‘African Square’ an iconic gathering place that is an extension of the building’s public domain, which in turn strengthens linkages to other city experiences.

The current phase was completed at a cost of $ 80 million [Aus] in late 2007.

The master plan facilitates the addition of a second Hotel, 20 000 sq m of Exhibition space, structured parking and an 8 000 sq m outdoor Exhibition Centre.
